Project 05 · Large-scale performance visuals
Foals. Life Is Yours
A visual environment built to move with the music.
For Foals’ 2022 Life Is Yours tour, the work extended the emotional language of the record into physical space.
The aim was to shape atmosphere, rhythm and scale in real time, giving the performance a stronger sense of coherence and emotional lift.
Fragmentation, light interference and recurring forms created tension between release and containment.
The system echoed the record’s movement between intimacy, euphoria and pressure without illustrating the music literally.
Phase 01 · Concept
Not background. Part of the performance.
The live visuals were treated as an extension of the music itself: a shifting environment built from rhythm, tension and release.
The design needed to create scale without losing intimacy, respond to rhythm without becoming illustrative, and hold the performance within one coherent visual world.
Phase 02 · Visual language
A small set of behaviours, endlessly varied.
The language was built from recurring behaviours rather than fixed imagery. Fragmentation disrupted stable forms; circular structures created focus, release and orientation.
Light operated as both atmosphere and structure, moving between clarity, interference and distortion across different songs, moods and scales.
Phase 03 · Performance visualisation
The system at architectural scale.
The language was tested within a live musical environment to understand how it could operate at stage scale and support different emotional states across the performance.
Silhouette, light and fragmented imagery became one field—capable of moving between intimacy, pressure, clarity and collective release.
Result
One language across changing emotional states.
The project established a visual system capable of operating across both intimate and large-scale moments of performance.
Fragmentation, light distortion and recurring geometric forms created a flexible framework that could evolve with the music while maintaining a consistent identity.
Rather than functioning as decorative accompaniment, the visuals became part of the performance itself—extending the atmosphere of the record into physical space and reinforcing the relationship between sound, light, movement and audience.
